Yes—tree roots can grow back after hydro jetting when the crack, open joint, or failed connection that admitted them is still there. Jetting can clear root mass and restore flow. It does not seal the pipe defect. The honest recurrence question is not “How powerful was the jet?” It is “What opening remains?”
That is especially relevant on Brooklyn blocks with mature London planes, sycamores, maples, or oaks near older clay and cast-iron laterals. The species does not diagnose the sewer. The camera does.
What hydro jetting does to roots
A hydro jet uses high-pressure water through a hose and selected nozzle to break up obstructions and flush loosened material. Professional machines vary: current manufacturer examples include a 3,000 PSI RIDGID jetter and a 4,000 PSI Spartan jetter. Pressure alone does not describe the job; flow, nozzle, access, line diameter, pipe condition, and operator technique all matter.
Jetting can remove more root mass and pipe-wall buildup than a simple opening through the middle. It can restore a working channel and help expose the pipe for inspection. It still leaves a living tree outside and, unless repaired, a route back into the pipe.
The same distinction applies to cable cutting. An EPA sewer-maintenance manual notes that augering can relieve a root blockage while root mass remains and regrows after injury. The clearing method changes how the obstruction is removed. It does not turn a leaking joint into a watertight one.
Why roots return
Roots need water, oxygen, nutrients, and space to grow. A damaged sewer joint can release moisture and provide a physical opening. Once a root tip gets through, branching roots can expand inside the line and catch paper, grease, and debris.
The USDA Forest Service review found older clay and concrete systems without rubber-gasketed joints especially prone to intrusion. It also describes mechanical root removal as temporary, with rapid regrowth possible and annual cutting used in some maintenance programs.
That does not mean your roots return on a one-year clock. Regrowth varies with the opening, tree, soil, pipe conditions, remaining root tissue, season, and completeness of clearing. A fixed six-, twelve-, or eighteen-month promise is not evidence.
What a post-jet camera should answer
The useful inspection happens when the line is clear enough to see the wall. A camera inspection should look for:
- the exact joint, crack, connection, or break where roots enter;
- whether roots appear at one location or several;
- clay, cast iron, PVC, or a material transition;
- offsets, missing pipe, corrosion, or fractures around the entry;
- standing water that may hide the lower wall or suggest grade trouble; and
- sound pipe on both sides of the defect.
NASSCO’s sewer assessment guidance identifies detailed CCTV as a key tool for locating roots and documenting structural and maintenance conditions. If the camera cannot pass or the water is too murky, say so. “We inspected what we could reach” is different from “the entire lateral is sound.”
Three honest paths after roots are cleared
1. Monitor
If the root entry is small, the surrounding pipe is serviceable, and the owner is not ready to repair, monitoring may be a conscious choice. Record the location and symptoms. Do not mistake an open line today for a permanent fix.
2. Maintain
Planned repeat cleaning may manage flow for a period when repair is deferred. The interval cannot be guaranteed from a generic article. It should be based on actual recurrence at that line, inspection findings, and the risk of another backup.
3. Repair the entry defect
A targeted repair may fit one failed joint or short damaged section. Repeated root entries, widespread breakage, or structural deterioration may support broader sewer-line repair, rehabilitation, or replacement. The defect pattern decides the scope.

Do not make the tree the first repair target
The pipe has to be vulnerable before roots can enter. An EPA manual notes that durable, watertight joints are unlikely to admit roots. Removing a tree while leaving a failed joint can sacrifice the canopy without fixing the sewer’s structural weakness.
Street trees also fall under NYC rules. Do not cut roots or remove a City tree on your own. Camera evidence belongs with the sewer professional; tree work belongs with NYC Parks and a qualified arborist where applicable.
